The ideal surface for 3D printing, borosilicate glass can be rapidly heated and cooled. Borosilicate glass is resistant to thermal shock as well as thermal expansion.
It is a very strong tempered glass so it will not crack when you try to pry a print off. Also, the edges are grounded and smooth. No chance of slicing your hand when handling it.
Heated beds are used because they dramatically improve print quality by keeping the extruded plastic warm and thus preventing warping.
